3Ready Prototyping Lab // Engineering Keynotes & Technical Workshops

Charles Lu

Mechatronics engineer, builder, and founder of 3Ready Prototyping Lab in Manila. Helping engineering faculties, student innovators, and research teams bridge digital CAD design with reliable physical execution.

Most engineering courses teach theoretical mechanics, finite element analysis, and perfect digital models. But real machines fail on physical friction, material shrinkage, and tolerance stack-up. Charles delivers zero-fluff technical keynotes and live workshops grounded in real workshop metrics, failed build autopsies, and the discipline of building things that actually work.

BLUEPRINT 01 // KEYNOTE 45–60 MINS

Engineering practice and real-world execution

Engineering textbooks teach static equilibrium and idealized kinematics. They rarely prepare graduates for the physical messy reality of thermal expansion, imperfect filament diameters, material creep, or parts that refuse to assemble because of 0.1 mm tolerance errors. In this keynote, Charles deconstructs what makes engineering work in the physical world. He examines how to navigate design ambiguity, align cross-functional teams across mechanical and software divides, and run structured failure autopsies when prototypes fail.

Core Learning Outcomes
  • Identify and compensate for physical tolerance stack-ups: Calculate clearance, transition, and interference fits for additive parts (±0.05 mm to ±0.20 mm) before cutting tooling or sending parts to print.
  • Navigate cross-disciplinary design ambiguity: Use physical boundary mockups and shared data interfaces to prevent miscommunication between software developers and mechanical designers.
  • Run systematic post-mortems on failed iterations: Break down mechanical, thermal, and slicer toolpath failures systematically rather than guessing at random variable changes.
Physical Stage Demonstrations: Machined vs. printed tolerance fit gauge block set (0.05 mm increments from ±0.02 mm to ±0.25 mm), exploded multi-part mechanical assembly showing internal brass heat-set inserts, captured nuts, and snap detents, and real workshop failure samples (delaminated structural brackets, warped baseplates, and sheared drive gears).
BLUEPRINT 02 // MASTERCLASS 60–90 MINS

Additive manufacturing and functional prototyping

Most people view 3D printing as an aesthetic tool for visual trinkets. In a production engineering lab, additive manufacturing is a functional fabrication method governed by polymer rheology, anisotropic layer adhesion, and thermal gradients. This masterclass strips away marketing hype to examine the mechanics of industrial-grade desktop FDM. Charles covers polymer selection, cooling dynamics, custom G-code scripting, and how to design load-bearing components that survive continuous mechanical stress.

Core Learning Outcomes
  • Design for anisotropic strength: Orient build layers relative to expected shear and tensile vectors to prevent delamination under mechanical load.
  • Select engineering polymers based on physical trade-offs: Choose between PLA, PETG, ABS/ASA, and TPU 95A based on glass transition temperatures, elongation at break, and chemical exposure.
  • Tune slicing pipelines for dimensional repeatability: Configure flow ratios, shrinkage compensation, line widths, and custom acceleration curves to achieve consistent ±0.1 mm repeatable tolerances.
Physical Stage Demonstrations: Calibrated functional desktop motion assembly demonstrating lead screw backlash compensation and belt tensioning, tensile test specimens printed at 0°, 45°, and 90° orientations demonstrating real-world layer boundary failure under tension, and cutaway functional enclosure displaying internal wire routing ducts, compliant living hinges, and O-ring gasket channels.
BLUEPRINT 03 // RESEARCH KEYNOTE 45–60 MINS

Research to physical reality: Translating laboratory concepts into hardware

University research produces groundbreaking concepts in biochemistry, sensing, and electronics, but many projects remain trapped in lab glassware or benchtop breadboards. Translating an academic concept into an ergonomic, deployable physical prototype requires specialized fabrication knowledge that research teams rarely have in-house. In this talk, Charles presents real case studies from collaborations with DLSU, OLFU, and Mapúa, demonstrating how to engineer rugged test rigs and biomedical housings on 24-to-48-hour turnarounds.

Core Learning Outcomes
  • Establish agile 24-to-48-hour iteration cycles: Structure experimental milestones into rapid physical prototypes that isolate mechanical variables from scientific variables.
  • Isolate sensitive electronics from fluids and chemicals: Design sealed, modular housings with chemical-resistant polymers for bench testing in wet laboratory environments.
  • Bridge academic bench setups with low-volume manufacturing: Prepare research prototypes for pilot batch fabrication without incurring high injection mold tooling costs.
Physical Stage Demonstrations: Functional All-in-One Glucometer test-strip delivery mechanism and casing (OLFU Medical Technology collaboration), modular Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (PMFC) fluidic test chamber (Mapúa Chemical Engineering collaboration), and edge face anti-spoofing camera chassis on Raspberry Pi with integrated passive thermal cooling ducting (Mapúa EECE collaboration, Best Presenter 2025).
BLUEPRINT 04 // WORKSHOP & KEYNOTE 60–120 MINS

MEM to market: Lean operations, Jiritsuka, and agile fabrication

How do you run an agile hardware enterprise without millions in venture capital or massive factory floors? You adapt the core principles of Manufacturing Engineering and Management (MEM) to small-scale, rapid-response operations. Drawing from his journey founding 3Ready Prototyping Lab and Luminary Studios, Charles breaks down the three operational pillars that keep his lab running: Jiritsuka (autonomous machine maintenance), Just-In-Time production (lean material control), and Kaizen (continuous process improvement).

Core Learning Outcomes
  • Apply Jiritsuka to maintain production machinery: Service, diagnose, and rebuild fabrication equipment in-house to maintain 95%+ fleet uptime without relying on external vendor support.
  • Implement Just-In-Time inventory control: Eliminate work-in-progress waste and dead inventory by aligning raw filament procurement and printer scheduling directly with active job orders.
  • Embed Kaizen into daily shop floor routines: Run root-cause analysis on process waste, print failures, and post-processing bottlenecks to shave hours off production cycles.
Physical Stage Demonstrations: Custom modular assembly jigs and post-processing holding fixtures designed and printed in-house, multi-stage physical artifact sequence showing a product progressing from initial rough proof-of-concept to final hand-finished commercial release, and fleet maintenance logbook with custom-printed diagnostic calibration test tools.
